The Question

Is a musical work the score, the performance, or the listener’s experience?

The score is incomplete. The performance is transient. The experience is private.

Why It Resists Closure

No single definition captures “the piece.”

A score is instructions, not music. A performance vanishes as it happens. A memory of music is already something else.

The work exists somewhere between all three — and nowhere completely.
